Overview

Canyon Critter Coffee, nestled along the scenic Hwy 2 E in Coram, Montana, is a compact coffee shack that packs a powerful punch. This isn’t your average sit-down café; it’s a cozy, take-away spot where the quality of the brew and the crafted food truly shine. For travelers wandering through the Big Sky Country or locals craving a genuine taste of Montana mornings, this gem offers a uniquely satisfying experience.

The coffee stands out immediately, with carmel lattes and matcha lattes receiving strong praise for their rich, smooth flavors. The beans are brewed with care, capturing that perfect balance between boldness and subtlety — ideal for those looking to start their day right or refuel after an outdoor adventure.

What truly elevates Canyon Critter Coffee are their pastries and breakfast burritos. The famed huckleberry puff tart has collected almost legendary status among visitors. It’s often compared to an elevated toaster strudel, featuring a flaky crust and a luscious, cream cheese-tinted frosting that harmonizes beautifully with the tartness of fresh huckleberries. This treat is a local treasure, unique to Montana’s berry culture, and perfectly complements the coffee.

The breakfast burritos, both veggie and sausage varieties, garner equal acclaim. The fillings are fresh, vibrant, and hearty, with the potato patties tasting as if freshly pressed from whole, hand-prepared potatoes. These burritos offer a comforting, robust option that satisfies well beyond the usual roadside fare. Perfect for early morning bikers, hikers, or anyone needing a substantial, flavorful meal on the go.

While the space may be limited to a small hut rather than a sprawling café, the warmth comes from the friendly staff who add a personal touch to every order. Families appreciate the thoughtful consideration, like caffeine-free drinks crafted specially for kids. This attention to detail enhances the overall experience, making visitors feel like honored guests rather than just customers.

Canyon Critter Coffee is ideally suited for travelers and locals who value quality, handcrafted coffee and artisan pastries without the pretense of a full-service restaurant. It appeals especially to those exploring the natural beauty of Montana, offering a wholesome fuel stop that pairs well with outdoor activities on crisp mornings. The occasional line of cars willing to wait is proof enough that this little critter has cast a big spell on the taste buds of anyone lucky enough to find it.

In essence, Canyon Critter Coffee is a humble but memorable mountain-side retreat. Its standout items — the huckleberry puff tart, fresh breakfast burritos, and expertly brewed drinks — create a narrative of local ingredients, artisanal care, and genuine hospitality. For anyone passing through Coram or planning a Montana visit, this spot deserves a top spot on your itinerary.

Fabulous matcha latte, delicious huckleberry puff and a breakfast burrito, the veggie one, that we are still talking about weeks later. The employees were so sweet and everything we ordered was perfect!! If we were local, we'd go here everyday. Hopefully we'll get to visit Montana again and if and when we do, we're definitely going here first!

The huckleberry puff tart tasted like an elevated toaster strudel! I would say it’s more like a toaster strudel than a pop tart, but in my opinion, that’s better! It was flaky, the filling was delicious, and the frosting had a hint of cream cheese that was amazing. So glad we stopped!!

This is a coffee hut, not a sit down shop. The coffee was very good, we got Carmel lattes. I also had a sausage burrito which was excellent as well as a potato patty that tasted like a fresh potato they just ground up and pressed in to a patty for us. The service here was also exceptionally friendly.

The coffee was amazing by itself, but add in the most delicious pastries (it was tie in our family btwn the hucklepuff and the critter bites) and the best burritos of our cross country trip (including texas/new mexico/arizona) and I think we made 7 stops in the 5 days we were there! The owners were awesome and on our last day they made special caffeine free drinks for the kids! This place is a gem.

My Godddd That is not using the Lord’s name in vein, that is using the Lord’s name in appreciation. This was a great spot. Maybe I was extra hungry. But we had a huckleberry puff tart, the seasoned Sando, a hot chocolate, and an iced chai. My goodness it’s all good. Everything is local or made in house down to where the chai tea comes from and the whipped cream on the hot chocolate. Spectacular spot on a sunny chilly mountain morning before a big bike ride. Only downside is while we were eating I watched a line of cars develop, with some people waiting a while. We got there when there was no line, but this could definitely be a problem I’d imagine. Either way I’ve been dreaming of a warm huckleberry puff tart since we left. Nothing like that in Wisconsin!

On our way back from Glacier National Park, we were in need of a caffeinated pick-up. We saw Canyon Critter’s cute shed on the side of the road and turned off. The barista was extremely friendly and welcoming. Of course we went with an iced, oat Huckleberry latte as the locals do. It was perfect without being too sweet. We sucked it down so quickly I didn’t even capture a photo. If I lived nearby, I’d be a regular.

We just returned from a 7k mi road trip all over the Mountain West and out of every place I ate - this place was the best!! The breakfast ham and cheese sammy was gooey, cheesy, toasty, warm, fantastic. The folks working were kind. The coffee was fresh roasted, perfectly prepared. Oh, and the views up Going To the Sun were cool, too

i’ve found that good food is hard to come by when visiting glacier, but this place was a hit! i loved that it’s a quick drive thru. the sausage burrito and huckleberry tart were yummy & filling (definitely big enough to share!) and the coffee was way better than the montana roasters they carry everywhere else. my only complaint is that it’s a little pricey and they don’t have their prices listed on their menu… $13 for a coffee shop breakfast burrito is a bit much
